TUMBLR

Tumblr is a blog site that makes sharing, writing, and customizing easy. It has been called “the easiest way to share yourself” by fans. Used by designers, illustrators, fashionistas, crafters or anyone else who has something to share, Tumblr helps to create a network of media.

History:

Tumblr was founded by David Karp in 2007. At the time 75,000 bloggers switched to Tumblr. By 2009 there were over 3 million users. In 2010, Tumblr was averaging 2,000,000 posts and 15,000 new users every day. Nowadays, there are 16,544,367 blogs and 4,503,678,173 posts. The average is 25 million posts per day just a year later.

Posting:

When using Tumblr, photos, quotes, music, chats, links, video, and text can be easily posted. Each media has it’s own options for posting making the process simple and clear. For example, when posing photos, each is uploaded separately, and more than one will automatically create a slideshow of pictures in your blog. In enabled, other users can post content to your blog. This allows many people to contribute to one blog. Contests can be created and collaboration is abundant. Tags can also be added to your posts to help people search for entries.

Customizing:

Tumblr allows both programmers and those who know nothing about HTML to create blogs. While the programmers can create a blog from scratching using HTML, everyone else can use the extremely well designed layouts available. There are 67 free themes offered for Tumblr users as well as themes available to purchase. Within each theme are more options to customize the colors, patterns, and text look of the blog.

Following/ Reblogging:

Tumblr’s use of reblogging helps to spread media across the internet. While keeping your own blog, you also keep up to date with other people’s posts by “following” them. The welcome screen to Tumblr becomes a never-ending history of blog posts from those you follow as well as showing your own posts. You can also “reblog” posts from others so that they appear on your blog. Drawings, photos, stories are all spread across tumblr by a network of reblogging.

Hype:

Tumblr has grown very fast in the last 4 years. It is one of the Obama Top 5 Tech Tools, the CEO, David Karp was named the Best Young Tech Entrepreneur by Business Week and was a finalist in Lead411's New York City Hot 125.
